چکیده

The temperature dependence of the phonon spectra of a-uranium has recently been measured by inelastic neutron scattering and inelastic X-ray scattering. Although there is little evidence of any anharmonicity, the phonon shows some softening in the optic modes at the zone boundary. Furthermore, an extra mode forms at high temperatures, which is incompatible with a structure composed of a monoclinic Bravais lattice with a two-atom basis. We investigate the effect that the f electron–phonon interaction has on the phonon spectrum and its role on the possible formation of a breathing mode. r 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Lattice dynamics and superconductivity in cerium at high pressure.

We have measured phonon dispersion relations of the high-pressure phase cerium-oC4 (α' phase with the α-uranium crystal structure) at 6.5 GPa by using inelastic x-ray scattering. Pronounced phonon anomalies are observed, which are remarkably similar to those of α-U. First-principles electronic structure calculations reproduce the anomalies and allow us to identify strong electron-phonon couplin...

Large harmonic softening of the phonon density of states of uranium.

Phonon density-of-states curves were obtained from inelastic neutron scattering spectra from the three crystalline phases of uranium at temperatures from 50 to 1213 K. The alpha-phase showed an unusually large thermal softening of phonon frequencies. Analysis of the vibrational power spectrum showed that this phonon softening originates with the softening of a harmonic solid, as opposed to vibr...

Lattice thermal conductivity of UO2 using ab-initio and classical molecular dynamics

We applied the non-equilibrium ab-initio molecular dynamics and predict the lattice thermal conductivity of the pristine uranium dioxide for up to 2000 K. We also use the equilibrium classical molecular dynamics and heat-current autocorrelation decay theory to decompose the lattice thermal conductivity into acoustic and optical components. The predicted optical phonon transport is temperature i...

Using Monte Carlo ray tracing simulations to model the quantum harmonic oscillator modes observed in uranium nitride

Recently an extended series of equally spaced vibrational modes was observed in uranium nitride (UN) by performing neutron spectroscopy measurements using the ARCS and SEQUOIA time-of-flight chopper spectrometers [A. A. Aczel et al., Nat. Commun. 3, 1124 (2012)]. These modes are well described by three-dimensional isotropic quantum harmonic oscillator (QHO) behavior of the nitrogen atoms, but t...
